Young Leader Scheme

14-18 year-olds can volunteer with our Group as Young Leaders.   This could be towards an award, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Explorer Scout Young Leader belt buckle, or another award scheme with a volunteering requirement.

Training

All Young Leaders must complete at least Module A - Prepare for Take-off (Essentials and Expectations) of the Young Leader Scheme; other modules must be completed if they are volunteering for the Explorer Scout Young Leader belt buckle, but are optional for those volunteering for other awards.

Explorer Scout Young Leader Belt Buckle

Explorer Scout Young Leaders are Explorers who volunteer alongside adult leaders in a younger section.  They're a valuable asset to any leadership team and play an active role in the section, bringing a range of fresh ideas to the table and acting as positive role models for the young people they work alongside.

The Explorer Scout Young Leaders’ Scheme is the training programme for Young Leaders.  It contains 11 modules and four missions for them to work through whilst volunteering in their chosen section.  Modules give Young Leaders the skills and knowledge to be successful in their role, while missions allow them to put everything into practice with support.

As well as developing valuable life skills, the scheme is an opportunity for Explorers to make a positive impact in their communities and to fulfil the service elements of many of the top awards in Scouts, or their Duke of Edinburgh's Award.  Recognition of achievement is available along the way, and on completion of the Scheme, the Young Leader is awarded with an Explorer Scout Young Leader belt buckle.

Explorer Scouts must speak to their Explorer Scout Leader before starting the Young Leader Scheme, and where possible, we ask that their Online Scout Manager (OSM) record is shared with the section they will be volunteering with.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

14-24 year-olds can do a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Some Section Leaders may use the Young Leader Scheme Missions (set for Explorer Scouts) as a guide, therefore Young Leaders may be asked to contribute in the following ways, depending on the needs and wants of both the Young Leader and Section Leaders:

This is a guide only, and some Leaders may agree different targets with Young Leaders in their section.

Registration

Young Leaders will be registered with a Young Leader Unit so they can be invited to training and their progress can be monitored; this will be arranged by their Section Leaders when they start.
